Small businesses should tailor recruitment practices to their size

If you are a small business that is looking to blossom into a medium or large business, it is only natural that you will look to the bigger or more established firms for inspiration. There is a lot to be said for not trying to reinvent the wheel when it comes to achieving business success, so following the actions of the firms you want to be like can be of great benefit.

However, if you are a small business, you often won’t be able to do or achieve what the bigger firms to do. In this regard, it is often far better to look around at you and see what firms of a similar size are doing. In fact, ideally you should be looking at the medium and big companies that have blossom from a smaller size, and then roll back to see what they did to get to the size that they are now. You’ll find that the current actions of major firms are markedly different from their actions when they were your size.

This isn’t always a negative thing; there are many positives to take from being a smaller firm. You have a greater opportunity to find the people that are right for you and who will fit in with your business. As you are likely to have a small number of current employees, it should be much easier to determine the mood, atmosphere and fit of your company.

The right person makes a big difference

When you are a small firm, there is a great deal to be said for bringing in the right person, and this includes their personality. This doesn’t mean that everyone needs to be the same, having a blend of personality types can make for a good mix in the office or workplace, but there is a need to ensure that everyone can work together as a team and pull together. One of the aspects that help small firms prosper is the individuals buying into what the company is looking to do. This means if you are seeking to recruit new employees, the personality of the people needs to be as important as their skills, qualifications and aims.

A lot of small firms will wonder how they can achieve this but there are simple ways you can determine if someone is likely to be a good fit for your business and allowing them to meet your employees during the application or interview process can be of benefit. If you have a small team, this won’t take much time, and as you want to make sure that your new recruit can engage and interact with your team, this makes perfect sense.

A major firm wouldn’t be able to get away with this sort of activity when they are looking to recruit, but this doesn’t mean that it is wrong for your firm. In business, it is important to understand where you currently are. Yes, it is good to have serious ambitions about where you want to be in life, but there are benefits associated with who you are right now as well.
